Betty Ward's career in adult and continuing education began as Adjunct Lecturer in the Adult Education Program at Howard University in Washington, D.C. From 1956-1986, she served as Adult Education Research Assistant/Manpower Development Specialist and Deputy Director of the African-American Affairs Staff at the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare/The U.S. Office of Education. Since 1986, she has served as International Education Policy Specialist with the U.S. Department of Education's International and Territorial Services Staff and has attended the Third World Conference on Adult Education in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, the Consultant Conference on University Adult Education in Accra, Ghana, the International Federation of University Women's Conference in Tokyo, Japan and Stirling, Scotland, and the UN's Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing. Her honors include Beta Gamma Sigma, Commerce Honorary Society, and the 1996 U.S. Department of Education Award for 49 years of Dedicated Public Service to the people of the United States. She also is a Past President of the American Association of University Women's D.C. Branch and was President of the Adult Education Association of the USA in 1975-1976.
