Ronald M. Cerverorvero

Ronald M. Cervero is one of the nation's preeminent scholars and writers in adult and continuing education. He is the Department Head and Professor of Adult Education at the University of Georgia which is one of the foremost adult education programs in America. Dr. Cervero has contributed significantly to continuing education in the areas of leadership, scholarship and service.
Dr. Cervero received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago and held faculty positions at Northern Illinois University before his move to the University of Georgia. His excellence as a teacher is recognized throughout North America. He has been a visiting professor at Harvard University; University of British Columbia; Penn State University; University of Wisconsin, Madison; University of Tennessee; University of Calgary; and Teacher's College, Columbia University.
Dr. Cervero has greatly contributed and enriched the field of adult and continuing education's growing body of knowledge through authoring several publications. His publications include six books, twenty-eight book chapters, and fifty-seven articles. Two of his books, Effective Continuing Education for Professionals and Planning Responsibility for Adult Education: A Guide to Negotiating Power and Interests are used as primary sources in graduate adult education programs throughout North America.
Dr. Cervero has provided exceptional leadership to continuing education through editorial expertise with some of the premier journals in the field. He was a consulting editor for the Adult Education Quarterly from 1982 to1988 and again from 1993 to 2000. He served as the editor from 1988 to1993. He has been an editor or is currently a consulting editor of Adult Literacy and Basic Education 1983 to1990, Adult Basic Education from 1990 to present, Canadian Journal for the Study of Adult Education from 1998 to present and Studies in Continuing Education from 1997 to the present.
Dr. Cervero has received many awards in recognition of his contributions to research, program development and teaching in the field of continuing education. He was the University of Georgia's Outstanding Teacher in 1997. He received the 1998 Okes Award for Research for his journal article with A.L. Wilson in the International Journal of Lifelong Education. Dr. Cervero was the recipient of the 1996 Oakes Award for an article he wrote with three colleagues in Adult Education Quarterly. He was honored with the 1989 Cyril O. Houle World Award for Literature in Adult Education and was also awarded the 1990 Frandson Award for Literature in the Field of Continuing Education with an honorable mention in 1991, given by the University Continuing Education Association.
Dr. Cervero's outstanding leadership as a teacher is most evident in the awards his students have received. He has had more students win the Graduate Student Research Award from the Adult Education Research Conferences than any other adult education professor in North America.
