During Russell Mawby's 31-year career at the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, which included 25 years as CEO, grantmaking in continuing education was a central thread of many programs for volunteers and the pre-service and in-service training of professionals. Such projects ranged across the Foundation's scope of interests: health promotion and service delivery, food systems, rural development and environmental issues, leadership, philanthropy and volunteerism, families and community development, communications technology, and education, formal and informal, at all levels. He was actively engaged in the Foundation's assistance to university-based residential centers for continuing education. These Foundation-assisted centers have served as models and have been widely replicated by universities throughout this country and around the world. As evidence of the growing stature of continuing education within the university context, Foundation assistance to Oxford University to establish the Kellogg Center for Continuing Education led to the creation in 1994 of Kellogg College as the 36th college of Oxford.

In 1980, he helped create the Kellogg National Fellowship Program which is one of the nation's premier leadership development programs. Additionally, with his oversight and counsel, a 1994 Kellogg Foundation grant to Regents College in New York helped create the National Commission on Adult learning.
