Gordon Guyer was named Director of the Michigan Department of Agriculture in 1994 after a long and distinguished career in agriculture, higher education, and natural resources development. He began his public service career as an instructor of entomology at Michigan State University (MSU) in 1953. Ten years later, he was named Professor and Chairman of the Department of Entomology and Director of MSU's Pesticide Research Center. The long list of his positions at MSU also includes: Director of MSU's Cooperative Extension Service, Associate Dean of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Director of the W.K. Kellogg Biological Station, and Special Assistant to the Senior Consultant to the President of MSU. Shortly after his retirement in 1986, he was named Director of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and served in that capacity for two years.

An internationally renowned entomologist and author of more than 70 scientific papers, he has served as a consultant to governments around the world on issues related to agriculture and natural resources.

Among his many honors are the Michigan Farm Bureau Distinguished Service to Agriculture Award, the Distinguished Faculty Award from the Michigan Association of Governing Boards, and MSU's Distinguished Faculty Award.
