Hall of Fame Class of 1997
Barbara Bush has been a catalytic and tireless creator of programs, foundations, and movements designed to provide individuals and families throughout the United States with the opportunity for literacy education. As this nation's First Lady from 1988 to 1992, her commitment to people and to issues of empowerment was so genuine and so credible that many of those who otherwise would not concern themselves with a literacy movement recognized its importance and took action. Corporate leaders joined educators in successful collaboration, thereby empowering learners in the home, the classroom, and the workplace in every state in the nation.
Her confidence in the renewal of the human spirit through education remains an inspiration and legacy for us all.
