Hamilton Stillwell began his career in adult education as an Extension Specialist and Director of the Newark Center for Rutgers University's Extension Division. He later became Director of The University Center for Adult Education at Wayne State University, the University of Michigan, and Eastern Michigan University. He also served as Professor of Education Wayne State University, Executive Director of The Detroit Adventure for The Arts Council of the City of Detroit, Dean of the Division of Urban Extension at Wayne State University, and finally, as Dean of the University Extension Division and Professor of the Graduate School of Education at Rutgers University. He held leadership positions in many professional associations, including serving as President of the New Jersey Adult Education Association, the Adult Education Association of Michigan, and the Adult Education Action Council. He also served as Chairman of the Coalition of Adult Education Organizations and the Council on Extension of the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges.
Listed in Who's Who in America from 1970 through 1977, he held several leadership positions in the Adult Education Association of the U.S.A., serving as the organization's National Conference Program Chair in 1962, Secretary in 1965-1966, and President in 1967-1968.
